Afro-Caribbean Music
with the Marlon Simon Latin Jazz Quartet
With the use of a piano, bass, and drums, youngsters are welcomed into the basic
teachings of instruments and rhythms used in Afro-Caribbean music, such as congas,
chekeres, cow bells, claves. There is an explanation of the cha cha, rumba, and
6/8 from Cuba, merengue from the Dominican Republic, joropo from Venezuela.
Students are given the opportunity to perform the basic rhythms on percussion instruments
alone and with the group. There are no dull moments! Just one magical musical moment
followed by another! The room constantly vibrates with gloriously moving and undulating sounds.
