African Drums, Percussion and Dance
with the Leonard "Doc" Gibbs Ensemble
From a purely musical education viewpoint, these four outstanding performers
are unequaled in teaching the history of African drumming, percussion, and
dance, and their use as communication tools throughout African history.
Audience participation in "call and response" brings students on stage to
experience first hand the compelling effect of rhythm and dance. The event
builds to an extraordinarily powerful and totally involving finale that will
be long remembered by teachers and their students, as attested to by its
reputation in Philadelphia area schools.
During a workshop with Greenfield Elementary School students, Doc Gibbs answers questions and the students try their hands at the exotic African instruments.
